A-C Valley’s Fox, North Clarion’s Obenrader Take Home D9 2A Girls’ Track & Field Titles

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (D9Sports) — Emma Fox of A-C Valley and Tori Obenrader of North Clarion lived up to expectations at the 2018 District 9 Class 2A Girls’ Track & Field Championships at Brookville High School Friday.

For the second straight year, Fox is the queen of the hurdles sweeping titles in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles, while Obenrader took home her second straight shot put title while also qualifying for the PIAA meet in the javelin and the discus with fifth-place finishes in both events but with qualifying distances.

Fox won the 100 hurdles in a time of 16.46 and the 300 hurdles in a time of 48.05. Fox was also third in the 100-meter dash (13.32) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.75).

Obenrader, meanwhile, won the shot put with a throw of 41-feet, 6 ¾-inches and was fifth in the discus with a throw of 115-11 and fifth in the javelin with a throw of 126-6.

Karns City’s Rebecca Pennington was also a double-winner at the meet taking home titles in the 1,600-meter run (5:23.98) and the 3,200-meter run (11:29.84), while Moniteau’s Kendall Grossman set a meet record in the pole vault with a winning leap of 11 feet, 4 inches) breaking the previous mark of 11-1 set in 2014 by Brookville’s Brandi Cooper.

Moniteau’s Cambrie Campbell qualified for the PIAA meet in a pair of throwing events taking second in the javelin (145-5) and sixth in the discus (113-2), an event that saw six girls’ all reach the qualifying mark, including Karns City’s Shaney Cheesman, who was fourth with a throw of 117-8.

Joining Grossman in heading to the state meet in the pole vault is Clarion’s Laken Lewis, who was second going over the bar at 11-feet even, while Clarion’s Lexi Lauer had a PIAA qualifying leap in the high jump taking fourth at 5-feet, 2-inches.

Clarion has a third athlete headed to states with Phylicia Hockman taking second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:27.60 to automatically qualify.

Elk County Catholic won the team title for the third time in the last five years and for the 13th time since 2001 with 72 points. Johnsonburg was second with 64.50 points, Punxsutawney third with 52.50 points and Brookville fourth with 49 points.

Oswayo Valley’s Sara McKean took home the James Manner Award as the meet’s MVP after winning three events.

McKean took home championships in the 200 (26.80), the long jump (17 feet, 7 ¼ inches) and the triple jump (36-5 ½). She was also a member of the second-place 4×100-meter relay team that qualified for the PIAA meet in a time of 50.79 joined on that squad by Shayla Bickel, Faith Coole and McKenzie Gross).
