foster families 2018CLARION, Pa. (EYT) – Clarion County Commissioners officially proclaimed May 2018 Foster Family Month in Clarion County this week and recognized the work being done by the Foster Families 4 Clarion County Kids.

Formerly known as the Foster Families Association, the group includes parents from the area who work together to improve the lives of children in foster care. The group recently started Clarion County Kids Closet to help children going into foster care.

“We started the Closet earlier this year,” said foster parents Margaret and Michael Harrigan who attended the Commissioner’s meeting.

“Meagan Wrhen, one of our foster moms and Christian Radaker came up with this idea, and we got a church to give us a room for the closet, and we are asking for donations, and there are drop-offs now.”

“Most (of) the kids we get have nothing.  When they come to us, they just have the clothes on their back. We fund a little gift card from Walmart for $25.00, and that’s not going to buy much.  With the Closet, we can take them there and give them some clothes for the interim, and if they transition into care, we have a way to give them clothing versus it coming out of the foster parent’s pocket.”

The Closet is a collection and distribution point for clothing, hygiene products, and other essentials for children in foster care in the county.

“We asked for donations, and the response has been good,” said Margaret. “We’re overwhelmed with the community giving so far, and we just wanted you guys to know we’re blessed.”

The group seeks to provide resources for foster parents and sponsor activities for foster families, including an annual Christmas party with Santa and two annual outings and currently runs entirely on donations.
