Clarion Borough Pool Builds Friendships While Offering Community Recreation

Borough Pool kids jumpingCLARION, Pa. – Families at the Clarion Borough Pool agree, it’s all about the friendships they’ve formed while enjoying time swimming and hanging out at the pool.

The pool has been a popular hangout for Clarion area families who want to cool off and spend some active time with friends.

The pool, located on Liberty Street next to the Clarion High School, recently received a face-lift to repair cracks and was painted by the Clarion Borough.  Many are pleased with the way the pool looks this year.

“It’s nice to see the pool looking so good,” said Mindi Verdill, a long-time pool patron.  The Verdill family has utilized the pool for the last 15 years.

“Mike and I have been coming since 1993,” Mindi noted.  “Our boys have come to the pool since the first summers of their lives.  They are now 15 and 13.  We come because it is a great place to hang out, swim, play and meet up with old and new friends.”

The pool saw record high attendance on Saturday, June 23 at the summer opening party and has already been the host to multiple pool parties.  Overall, attendance is up compared to recent years.

“Admission was only $1 for kids on June 23 for the opening party and that drew a crowd,” said YMCA Pool Manager Jason Brinkley.  “We have also had quite a few pool parties and groups using the pool.  It has been a very busy month.”

The pool had a slight delay in opening this year due to pool maintenance and several days of rain, but rebounded with some very hot 90 degree days in June.  Those high temperatures warmed the pool to a very comfortable 82-84 degrees.

The YMCA employs the pool manager and eight lifeguards, provides swim lessons, and coordinates events and parties at the pool.  The pool is open seven days a week from 12:00 to 6:00 pm.  Day passes are $5 per person.  Season passes are also available.

“I like to come to the pool so I can swim and hang out with my friends,” Ashlyn Clark noted as she hung out with a group in the deep end of the pool.

The Clark family realizes how important the pool is to the community.  Dan Clark recently spearheaded an effort to raise matching funds for a grant to keep the pool in operation.

“I’m loving seeing the community use our pool, seeing kids of all ages socializing, and people enjoying the facility. Please keep the momentum going and consider making a donation to our United Way campaign for supporting the Boro’s grant writing endeavors- let’s demonstrate public support (regardless of municipality of residence) for the pool,” Clark wrote in a Facebook post.

The United Way is still accepting donations.  Funds will be used to keep the pool in operation in the coming years.  Monies raised will be used as “matching funds” for grant writing efforts.  Donations can be made online at the United Way of Clarion County.  Pledge forms can also be printed and mailed.
