JENKS TWP., Pa. (EYT) — A New York man is facing felony assault and related charges stemming from a violent incident that occurred last weekend in Jenks Township, Forest County.

According to court documents, 39-year-old Joseph Andrew Cohen of Jamestown, NY, was arraigned at 6:14 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, in Magisterial District Judge Daniel L. Miller’s office on the following charges:

  • Aggravated Assault, Felony 2
  • Criminal Attempt — Aggravated Assault, Felony 2
  • Possession of Controlled Substance, Misdemeanor
  • Use/Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Misdemeanor
  • Terroristic Threats With Intent to Terrorize Another, Misdemeanor 1 (two counts)
  • Criminal Mischief-Tamper with Property, Misdemeanor 3

Unable to post $35,000.00 monetary bail, he was lodged in the Warren County Jail.

According to a criminal complaint, around 4:34 p.m. on Friday, July 13, Joseph Andrew Cohen, of Jamestown, New York, became upset while talking to a known female on the front porch of a residence on Snyder Lane in Jenks Township.

The complaint states that the female victim tried to calm Cohen down, but he continued to yell and was confronted by a second woman, who also asked him to calm down.

According to the complaint, Cohen exited and reentered the house several times while continuing to yell and threatened both of the women, stating he “was going to beat their faces in.”

The complaint states that Cohen then began to punch and smash items in the residence. He broke a mirror on the bedroom door, a window in the front door, a bedroom window, and a storm door with his hands before using a baseball bat to break out the screen on the front porch.

Cohen then picked up a piece of broken glass from the front door and sliced his own forearm causing a large laceration, according to the complaint.

While one of the women was on the phone with the police, Cohen was pounding on the door of the bathroom where the two women were hiding.

Troopers Bauer and Bell responded to the scene.

According to the complaint, upon the arrival of the troopers, Cohen came out of the residence screaming at both of the troopers and back at the victims inside the residence. At that time, Cohen was bleeding from his forearm and covered with blood.

Trooper Bell asked Cohen what he had in his pockets, and Cohen said “my knife, a wallet, and my bowl,” the complaint indicates.

After Cohen produced the items, Trooper Bell noted one of the items was a blue glass pipe used for smoking marijuana.

Trooper Bauer then handcuffed Cohen and had him sit on the ground while an ambulance was requested to treat his injuries.

Corporal Owen arrived at the scene and remained outside with Cohen and Trooper Bauer while Trooper Bell went inside to check on the victims.

According to the complaint, Cohen then began yelling again, stood up, and attempted to go toward the residence. After he failed to obey an order from the troopers to sit down, Trooper Bauer physically took him to the ground.

The complaint says Cohen then began to kick at Trooper Bauer and Corporal Owen, and Trooper Bauer was kicked in the left side of his body under his armpit.

A preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday, July 17, with Judge Miller presiding was continued and the next hearing has not yet been scheduled.
