Man Accused of Apparent Road Rage Incident in New Bethlehem

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. (EYT) — A 27-year-old man is facing criminal charges after allegedly brandishing a firearm in an apparent road rage incident in New Bethlehem.

Court documents indicate the New Bethlehem Borough Police Department filed the following criminal charges against 27-year-old James Phillip Maddox, of DuBois, on August 9:

– Terroristic Threats W/ Intent To Terrorize Another, Misdemeanor 1
– Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Misdemeanor 2

According to a criminal complaint, a known man reported that around 11:28 a.m. on June 13, he was traveling north on State Route 28 toward New Bethlehem when a white Chevrolet Silverado attempted to pass his vehicle while traveling through a construction zone.

The male victim said the truck was unable to successfully pass his vehicle due to the construction and pulled behind him again. The victim explained that the driver of the truck began “flicking him off” and making gestures with his middle finger, the complaint states.

According to the complaint, as the vehicles entered New Bethlehem Borough, the victim moved into the left turning lane near the intersection of State Route 28 and State Route 66. The driver of the truck continued straight and came to a stop at the red light.

The victim stated that he exited his vehicle because he could not hear what the driver of the truck was saying. The driver of the truck, later identified as James Maddox, then exited his vehicle, drew a firearm, and pointed it at the victim and said, “You better get back into your vehicle.” Maddox then left the scene in a northbound direction.

According to the complaint, video camera surveillance footage that was extracted from the street corners at the intersection where the incident occurred showed a Chevrolet Silverado with a Pennsylvania registration owned by Maddox and also showed Maddox exiting his vehicle and displaying what appeared to be a firearm.

Maddox faces a preliminary hearing at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 27, with Magisterial District Judge Jeffrey C. Miller presiding.
