Clarion (1-6, 0-6 PSAC) will return to conference action this weekend when they host IUP at Memorial Stadium.

The junior from northeast Ohio broke a deadlock that dragged on for more than 41 minutes and the entirety of the second half. Veronika Noyszewski had just subbed into the game and sprung the play into action, sending a pass to Roman that the later buried for her first goal of the season to make it a 2-1 victory.

The Arrows made one more run at tying the score, earning a corner kick in the 87th minute. Anya Miller’s header was blocked in front of the net but Megan Rafac had another crack at it, with keeper Krista Mosi stopping the attempt to seal the win.

Mackenzie Sheldon got things going in the first half when she scored her second goal of the campaign, putting Clarion ahead 1-0 in the 37th minute. The Arrows responded in the 44th minute, tying the score at 1-1 on a goal by Dominique Buddenhagen.

Ursuline outshot Clarion 12-9 in balls on net with Clarion goalkeepers making 11 saves. Mosi earned the win with 45 shutout minutes in the second half.

SPENCER NAMED INTERIM ASSISTANT SWIM COACH

Clarion head swimming & diving coach Bree Kelley announced today that Ben Spencer has been named the interim assistant coach for the men’s and women’s swimming teams. One of the top men’s swimmers in the program’s recent history, Spencer brings familiarity with the roster as well as his own wealth of knowledge and experience.

“We are so thrilled to add Ben to our staff!” Kelley said. “He was an exceptional student-athlete, and a true example of what our program stands for. He has a wide knowledge of technique, nutrition and lifting, and I am excited to bring him to our team.”

A native of Tunkhannock, Pa., Spencer set and broke a number of school records in his years as a student-athlete and was consistently one of the team’s top performers at the PSAC Championships. In 2018 he helped the men’s squad to a fourth-place finish by winning the 200 Breast, taking second in the 400 IM and third in the 100 Breast. Spencer was part of the winning 800 Free Relay team, the first Clarion men’s relay victory at the PSAC Championships in many years, as well as the 400 Free Relay team that was runner-up.

Spencer set five school records in his junior season of 2016-17, breaking the conference record and winning the 200 Back at the PSAC Championships. He placed in the top-eight in six other events that year at PSAC’s as the men finished fourth. At the 2015 PSAC Championships, Spencer took fifth place in the 200 Back and seventh place in the 100 Back, and in 2014 he was part of a fourth-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay.

Spencer currently holds four individual school records, including the 200 Back (1:49.08), 200 Breast (2:00.50), 200 IM (1:49.53) and the 400 IM (3:59.57). He also contributed to team records in the 200 and 400 Medley Relays in 2016.
