NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. (EYT) — Joe Harmon, who teaches eighth and tenth-grade social studies at Redbank Valley High School, has been nominated for the 2018-2019 National LifeChanger of the Year award.

LifeChanger of the Year is an annual program to recognize educators and school employees across the country. The program seeks to celebrate individuals who are making a real difference in the lives of students by demonstrating excellence, positive influence, and leadership in a school setting.

Harmon, a self-proclaimed “Navy brat,” spent his youth living in various cities, from San Diego, California to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has been living in the New Bethlehem Area since graduating from Anchor Bay High School in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan.

He attended Clarion University where he received a BS Ed. degree in Secondary Ed. Social Studies and later earned a Master’s of Education degree from Lock Haven University.

Harmon has been employed as a social studies teacher at Redbank Valley Junior Senior High School for the past 14 years. He has also served as the advisor of the school’s Bible Club and is on the National Teachers Council for Civics.

Harmon was previously a 2016 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year finalist as well as the 2016 Pennsylvania History Teacher of the Year.

He was nominated for the LifeChanger of the Year award by his spouse, Kelli Harmon, for his active work in the community.

Each school year, LifeChanger of the Year receives hundreds of nominations from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Seventeen individual LifeChanger of the Year awards will be given during the 2018-2019 school year, with cash prizes of up to $10,000 awarded to the winners’ school districts.
