SLIGO, Pa. (EYT) – A Sligo man facing strangulation and related assault charges after allegedly choking a woman at a residence in Sligo is due in court next week.

Court documents indicate 33-year-old Jeremiah Joseph Morris, of Sligo, is scheduled to stand for a preliminary hearing in front of Magisterial District Judge Jeffrey C. Miller at 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, on the following charges:

• Strangulation — Applying Pressure to Throat or Neck, Felony 1
• Aggravated Assault, Felony 2
• Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2
• Harassment — Subject Other to Physical Contact, Summary
• Disorderly Conduct Engage In Fighting, Summary

Details of the case:

According to a criminal complaint, around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, Officers Hawk and Clark, of the New Bethlehem Borough Police Department, were dispatched to a residence on Penn Street in Sligo for an active assault.

The victim reported that Jeremiah Morris took off in a silver Nissan with a handgun and a box of ammo, the complaint states.

The officers questioned the victim who reported that Morris had been drinking since 2:00 p.m. He was intoxicated and came home late. She indicated that she and Morris were in the kitchen area when they began to have a verbal dispute in front of their seven-year-old child, the complaint states.

According to the complaint, the victim reported that Morris grabbed her by the throat with both hands, applying pressure to her throat, then placed her over the kitchen table while both hands were still around her throat. She said that Morris released her when the seven-year-old child began crying and became visibly upset.

The complaint notes that while the victim spoke to the officers, she continued to attempt to contact Morris by cell phone.

Pennsylvania State Police Officers then arrived at the scene and informed Officers Hawk and Clark that they were going to travel in the direction that Morris had traveled.

A short time later, the victim indicated to the officers that Morris was traveling toward the house in the vehicle she described.

The complaint notes that the State Police Troopers were about 30 seconds behind him.

Officer Hawk drew his sidearm and was stood directly in front of the vehicle yelling commands to stop. Morris slowed almost to a stop then proceeded toward Officer Hawk, causing him to move off the roadway to the berm between a parked car and Morris’s vehicle.

Morris then stopped the car in the driveway of his residence and was taken into custody.

The complaint notes his gun was also secured.

Morris was arraigned on Sunday, October 28, in Magisterial District Judge Jeffrey C. Miller’s office.

Unable to post $30,000.00 monetary bail, he was lodged in the Clarion County Jail.

He was released on Monday, October 29, on a surety bond posted by a professional bondsman.
