Ernest McPherson Obit PhotoErnest “Ernie” Orr McPherson, 85, of Brookville, died Wednesday, November 28, 2019, at Jefferson Manor.

Born in Reynoldsville on August 1, 1933, he was the son of Ernest D. and Lillian June (Smith) McPherson.

Ernie married Donwydette “Dumpy” Pyle on November 6, 1954, and the couple was blessed with four children, all of whom survive; Steven E. McPherson and wife Wendy of Brookville, Christy R. McNutt and husband James of Sigel, Dusten E. McPherson and wife Nancy of Brookville, and Honey Dawn Dusch and husband Scott of Brookville.

Graduating from Reynoldsville High School, Ernie enlisted in the United States Air Force where he received mechanics training. Following his discharge, he was employed with Brookville Equipment where he worked as a mechanic, moving into body repair and refinishing, upholstery, and heavy truck towing and recovery for the company. He served as a Deputy Game Warden in Jefferson County and was a Deputy Sheriff in Jefferson County as well. He enjoyed patrolling at the county fairs, both in Brookville and Sykesville and served as security at the DuBois Regional Airport.

Over the years Ernie attended various churches and held to a strong faith in God. He was a scoutmaster and member of Order of the Arrow, as well as a member of the original Emerickville Sportsmens Club. He loved hunting, including archery. Working at upholstering, Ernie mastered the art and did beautiful custom jobs. As a mechanic, Ernie had a special fondness for tinkering on the VW beetle, a talent he was quick to share with his sons as they began their own tinkering.

Those who knew Ernie through the years became well acquainted with his love for dogs. You didn’t often see him without a dog by his side or riding shotgun in his vehicle. From his labs Smokey, Bear, Sadie, and Bubba, to the other assortment of dogs that passed through his life, Ernie loved them all. He also enjoyed an aquarium at home.

In addition to his children, Ernie is survived by eight grandchildren; Seth (Heather) McPherson, Katy (Chris) Alderton, Marlena (Cliff) Deemer, Devon (Cory) Johnston, Meghan (Adam) Thron, Jesse McNutt, Mekka (Michael McCarthy) Dusch, and Michelle (Paul) Bogdonas; fifteen great-grandchildren; his sister Lillian Henderson, of New Bethlehem; and fiance Deborah Gillung, her children Amber Siar and Timothy Gillung, and their families.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by McKinney-d’Argy Funeral home in Brookville, where there will be visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, December 3. Additional visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., followed by a celebration of Ernie’s life at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4, at the Evangelical United Methodist Church,
Brookville.

Memorial donations may be made in Ernie’s memory to Western PA CARES for Kids, 3262 Route 322, Brookville, PA 15825, or Pine Creek K-9 Unit, c/o Pine Creek Volunteer Fire Department, 18656 Route 322, Brookville, PA 15825.
