5c2abc86dd80cThelma M. Carroll, 98, of Emlenton, passed away unexpectedly Monday morning, December 31, 2018 at Highland Oaks in Clarion.

Thelma was born on February 19, 1920 near Knox.

She was the daughter of the late Harvey and Margaret Feathers Knight.

Mrs. Carroll was a homemaker.

She enjoyed flower gardening, travelling with her son, and had a keen interest in Civil War history, having owned a collection of letters, documents, and other memorabilia.

She was a member of the former St. John Reformed Church in Emlenton for more than 40 years and had served the church as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, and deaconess.

She later became a member of the Salem Reformed United Church of Christ in Lamartine.

Thelma was a member of the Emlenton Civic Club, The Over 55 Club, The Women’s Fellowship and The Order of Eastern Star in Emlenton for nearly 40 years.

Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by her husband, Newton A. “Bud” Carroll, who died on June 6, 1997.

Thelma was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard Shoup.

Surviving is a son, Leonard Carroll of Lake Latonka in Mercer, two daughters, Peggy Webb and her husband, Clayton, of Conneaut, OH and Kathy Sanders and her husband Dale “Chip” of Seneca; four grandchildren, Emily Mundi and her husband, Lenny, of Conneaut, OH and Terri Webb and her husband, Juan Carlos Gutierrez, of Pittsburgh, Shannon Sturdevant and her husband, Burt, of Cambridge Springs and Aaron Sanders and his wife, Erika, of Rochester, NY; five great grandchildren, Deleni, Sophia, and Livia Gutierrez Webb and Gavin and Ethan Sanders; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Howard, Ford, Maurice, Walter, Harvey Jr., and Jethro Knight; three sisters, Ruth Buck, Helen Etzel, and Genevieve Wareham.

Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home Inc., 1204 Kerr Ave., Emlenton, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Thursday.

A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. from the funeral home with the Rev. Chris Lewis, pastor of the Salem United Church of Christ, officiating.

Interment will follow in Emlenton Cemetery.
