Robert N. “Bob” Culbertson, 91, of Oil City, Pinegrove Township, died at 10:45 a.m. on Monday, January 7, 2019 at The Caring Place in Franklin, surrounded by loving family.
He was born October 10, 1927 in Oil City to the late Clyde and Jean (Snyder) Culbertson.
Bob was raised on Clark Summit and had many fond memories of growing up in Oil City.
When he was young, he worked at a community grocery store on Main Street and saved up enough money to buy a bicycle; but his father ran over it in the garage one day returning home from work.
Bob served in the U.S. Navy as a cook aboard the USS Comstock and was also onboard the USS Helm. He served from February 7, 1945 until his honorable discharge on August 29, 1946.
He then returned home and later graduated from Oil City High School in 1947.
Mr. Culbertson was a member of the Oil City American Legion Post 32; and volunteered at the Venango County 4-H Fairgrounds.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Bob enjoyed hunting and harvested several deer through the years.
He was a talented carpenter and woodcarver.
He made beautiful oak furniture, a roll-top desk, and a dollhouse with hand cut shingles.
Bob enjoyed working in his yard and riding his Cub Cadet tractor.
Bob and his wife June enjoyed doing extensive remodeling and renovations to an older summer cottage in Coal Hill that became their home for many years.
They enjoyed their friends and neighbors in the Coal Hill neighborhood.
Bob was employed by the United States Postal Service, moving from custodian to clerk, and retiring in 1982 as a customer service manager at the Oil City post office.
He was married in Oil City on June 26, 1947 to the former Shirley “June” (Dalrymple), and she preceded him in death in 1997.
Surviving is a daughter, Penny S. Culbertson of Franklin; a sister, Patricia Long of Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ken Culbertson; two sisters, Shirley Wise and Louise Fischer; brothers-in-law: Robert Fischer, Rev. Russell Long, Albert Wise, and Chuck Kelley; sisters-in-law: Faith Kelley Hovis and Jackie Culbertson; and two nephews, Dave Long and Kevin Culbertson.
Friends will be received Thursday (Jan. 10) from 4-7 p.m. in the Hile-Best Funeral Home, 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Township; and on Friday (Jan. 11) from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service, Friday at 12 noon.
Pastor Jeremy Stouffer, chaplain at The Caring Place, will officiate.
The V.E.T.S. Honor Guard will accord full military honors following the funeral.
Private interment will follow in Brandon Cemetery in Cranberry.
