Pie-WinnerHARRISBURG, Pa. (EYT) – A former Knox woman can now officially say she makes the best apple pie in the state!

Marie Miller, a former Knox resident who currently resides in Cumberland County, was the winner of this year’s Blue Ribbon Apple Pie contest at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.

According to The Sentinel, Miller’s caramel pecan apple pie, made with Granny Smith and Pink Lady apples, went head-to-head with 69 other pies to take the coveted blue ribbon.

Second place was awarded to Dorothy Martin, of Conestoga, third place to Laura Bomgardner, of Jonestown, fourth place to Sharon Karlheim, of Patton, and fifth place to Debra Martin Berkoski, of Conestoga.

Pie-Winner-2

The competition, which is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs and the Pennsylvania Apple Marketing Program, is considered the “Super Bowl” of baking in Pennsylvania. It is only open to the first-place winners from the 109 county and community agricultural fairs in the previous year.

Miller, who considers herself a self-taught baker, started competing in 2013 when she entered a blueberry pie in a pie contest in Mechanicsburg. She took first place on her very first attempt and found a taste for competing. Her most recent win brings her tally up to a total of 159 ribbons.

Along with her latest ribbon, her win at the Pennsylvania Farm Show also netted her a $500.00 check, which Miller said she plans to use toward a new stove.
