Korey Mills North ClarionKARNS CITY, Pa. (D9Sports) – North Clarion sharpshooter Korey Mills said he wasn’t really feeling it from 3-point range heading into Friday night’s showdown at Karns City.

Maybe Mills shouldn’t feel it more often.

The senior stroked six 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 24 points to lead the visiting Wolves to a 74-51 win.

“I didn’t shoot very well my last game,” Mills, who added five rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot to his career high in points while being named the Hager Paving Player of the Game, said. “I was kind of disappointed. Yesterday (at practice) I wasn’t feeling it very much either. But tonight, I guess, I was saving it for the game.”

Relisten to the game:

Korey Mills wasn’t the only North Clarion player feeling it Friday night, as the Wolves hit 11 3-pointers in the contest.

“We just came out and started firing and they were going in,” Korey Mills said.

Tyler McCord-Wolbert had the hot hand in the first half hitting three long balls to help the Wolves to a 35-20 halftime lead. McCord-Wolbert finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

“(Tyler hitting 3’s) gets it (the blood) pumping,” Korey Mills said. “If he is hitting them, anyone can hit them really.”

North Clarion used a 14-0 run at the end of the first quarter that featured four points from Kyle Mills, who had eight points and nine rebounds in the contest, and four from Korey Mills to take a 19-7 lead after a quarter.

“That (getting a big lead) is very important,” Korey Mills said. “That is the key to our game.”

A pair of 3-pointers by McCord-Wolbert at the start of the second quarter helped open the advantage to 25-9 less than two minutes into the quarter.

But Karns City stabilized and went on an 11-2 run of its own thanks to a 3-pointer from Ethan McElroy and four straight points from Chase Beighly, who finished with a team-best 19 points to go with five rebounds, to cut the Wolves lead to seven, 27-20, with 2:34 to play in the opening half.

But Korey Mills hit a 3-pointer at the 2:03 mark to end the run, and then capped the quarter when he took a feed from Logan Minich, who had seven points and four assists, and drilled another triple with 2.1 seconds left to push the lead back to 15 at halftime.

Korey Mills then hit two more 3-pointers and scored eight points during a 10-4 spurt to start the second half that all but put the game away.

“It was very important to get (the lead) to double digits (at halftime),” Korey Mills said. “It was also very important to have the intensity going into halftime and coming back out in the third quarter with the same intensity.”

Sam Minich added eight points, 10 assists, three rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots for North Clarion.

Nathan Waltman, who scored eight third-quarter points, added 16 points and seven rebounds and Austin Fahlor had seven points and six rebounds despite fouling out late in the third quarter for Karns City.

The win improved North Clarion to 11-0 on the season. The Wolves and 12-0 Elk County Catholic are the only remaining unbeaten boys’ teams in District 9.

Karns City fell to 7-4 with the loss.

North Clarion is back in action Monday when it hosts Keystone. Karns City travels to Clarion-Limestone Monday and will try to avenge a 68-53 loss to the Lions in the championship game of the West Shamokin Holiday Tournament Dec. 28.
