North Clarion Alumni Developing Scholarship Endowment for Valedictorians
FRILLS CORNERS, Pa. – A group of North Clarion High School alumni are giving future NCHS valedictorians a jump start into an accredited college or technical school by developing a scholarship endowment.
NCHS alumnus Dan Gordon initiated the effort last spring proposing a scholarship to the valedictorian of the Class of 2021 on the 50th anniversary of his own graduation.
After a successful career, Gordon wanted to give back to the community. He discussed the scholarship with fellow alumni and school officials, and the idea expanded into developing an endowment, so all future NCHS valedictorians, and possibly salutatorians, would be eligible for a scholarship.
Gordon felt that valedictorians and salutatorians deserve a specific scholarship based on their long-term academic leadership throughout high school.
To fund the scholarship, he has reached out to fellow NCHS alumni for donations. It’s a unique proposition; there are no similar scholarships and no local alumni groups sponsoring high school scholarships.
With the support of fellow Class of 1971 members Steve Gilford, Bill Aaron, Rick Rathfon, and others, Gordon is calling for donations from all North Clarion alumni and friends of North Clarion.
An endowment is a donation to a non-profit institution – in this case to the North Clarion Foundation to fund academic scholarships. Most endowments are designed to provide a permanent source of income by keeping the original amount invested and using only the interest.
Gordon said the minimum annual award from the North Clarion Alumni Sponsored Scholarship would be $500.00, and it would take $12,500.00 to establish an endowment to fund the award.
Since it could take time to raise the funds for an on-going endowment, Gordon has proposed a series of challenge scholarships for the classes of 1969 through 1972. Each class in that era would directly fund a minimum $500.00 scholarship for their respective 50-year anniversary class. Should a class raise more than $2,000.00 for the valedictorian and salutatorian scholarships, the excess would roll over into the endowment for future scholarships.
To kick things off, the Class of 1971 has challenged the Class of 1969 to raise funds for the class of 2019 Valedictorian and Salutatorian scholarships. Any North Clarion alumni, friend of North Clarion schools, or individual in support of education may contribute to the cause.
Tax-deductible donations can be mailed to North Clarion Foundation – Alumni Scholarship, 10439 Route 36, Tionesta, PA 16353.
