Shawn Wattsjer Wierbinski

10432157_1404243873218760_3823885782044191911_n[1]Shawn Wattsjer Wierbinski, 60, a resident of 234 Parker Avenue, Rocky Grove, died peacefully at 7:33 PM Thursday, January 10, 2019 at The V.A. Medical Center in Erie; following a period of declining health.

He was born October 15, 1958 in Franklin, a beloved son of the late: Donald Eugene Gustafson and Medora Mae “Dodie” Wattsjer Gustafson.

While in high school, Shawn was a track and field athlete and had been a member of the baseball team.

Following high school, he proudly served his country during the Vietnam War era, as a medical corpsman with the U.S. Navy.

He served in Hong Kong and The Philippines, stationed aboard The USS Samuel Gompers.

He was medically discharged, honorably, from active duty in 1978.

Always a carefree spirit, Shawn enjoyed riding his motorcycle and car rides with his dog, Stanley.

He and his wife enjoyed watching westerns and particularly enjoyed watching The Lonesome Dove series on TV.

He will be deeply missed by all those who loved him.

Shawn was married July 14, 2016 to the former Carrie A. Hoss, who survives.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his children: Erik Culver and wife, Amanda of Oil City; Ryan Culver of Franklin and Matt Culver and wife, Christy also of Franklin; their mother, Kim Culver of Franklin and Gabriel “Boone” Purich of Oil City and his mother, Debbie Smith also of Oil City.

Also surviving are many grandchildren and a great grandson. Also surviving is his step-daughter, Emily Stone of Franklin.

Shawn is also survived by a brother, Don Gustafson and by a half-sister, Kira Wierbinski Shirey and husband Michael.

Also surviving is his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Harry and Susan Hoss; in addition to many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and close friends, including: Scott Loomis and Mary Lee and Troy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Kirsten.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no public visitation.

Funeral services shall be private, at the convenience of his family.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be directed to either to his wife, Carrie to help defray funeral expenses or in his name to The Venango County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1045, Oil City, PA 16301.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Timothy E. Hartle Funeral Home, 1328 Elk Street, Franklin.
