Crawford County Fire Claims Two Lives

CENTERVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — Two people lost their lives in a fire in Crawford County early Thursday morning.

According to GoErie.com, Crawford County Coroner Scott Schell identified the couple found dead following the Athens Township blaze as Frederick Doner, 72, and Sandra Doner, 74.

Schell stated that the couple died of asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation.

According to Erie County 9-1-1, the fire occurred at 18737 Shauberger Road in Athens Township and was reported around 12:35 a.m. on Thursday

Emergency responders from Centerville, Corry, Bloomfield Township, Hydetown, Spartansburg, Townville, and Union City volunteer fire departments were dispatched to the scene, as well as Centerville, Spartansburg and EmergyCare ambulances.

Pennsylvania State Police in Corry said firefighters found Frederick Doner inside the residence, but his wife, Sandra Doner, could not be located before the house became fully engulfed.

Police reported that once the fire was out, most of the structure collapsed into the basement, and heavy equipment had to be brought in to excavate the debris.

Investigators say Sandra Doner’s body was found around 11:00 a.m. Thursday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal’s Unit.
