John P. “Jack” Slye

JackJohn P. “Jack” Slye, 78, of Seneca, died Tuesday evening, May 28, 2019, at Sugarcreek Station in Franklin.

He was born in Oil City on November 27, 1940, to the late John W. “Bus” and Elda (Goodman) Slye.

He was a 1959 graduate of Cranberry High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served four years, from 1962 through 1966.

Jack was a former member of the Keystone Gold Wing Motorcycle Association.

He was a member of the Seneca Evangelical Congregational Church.

Jack enjoyed riding his motorcycle, hunting, and fishing.

Mr. Slye was a master mechanic, being employed in the automotive repair field for over 30 years. He began working for Miller Auto Supply in Oil City, and then for Seneca Motors (later Doug Dart Chevrolet). Jack eased into retirement by working as a line assembler for Continental Can Company in Oil City.

He was married in Fryburg in September of 1964 to the former Janet L. Heckathorne, and she preceded him in death on April 8, 1993.

Surviving are two sons: John M. Slye and his wife Michele of Dayton, Ohio; and David P. Slye and his wife Laura B. of Stafford, Virginia; three grandchildren: Melina R. Slye, John M. Slye II, and Joey Slye; two sisters: Janet Heckathorne of Bellefonte and Debbie Harrison and her husband Terry of State College; a brother, Jim Slye and his wife Marcia of Oil City; numerous nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Joan Slye of Dayton, Ohio; and Judy Slye of Summerville, South Carolina.

In addition to his parents and wife, Jack was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew “AJ” Slye; two brothers, Richard and Dale Slye; a sister, Darlene Slye; a brother-in-law, Bill Heckathorne; and a niece, Jami (Slye) Gahr.

Friends and family will be received Friday ( May 31) from 4 — 8 p.m. and on Saturday (June 1) from noon until 1 p.m. in the Hile-Best Funeral Home, 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Township. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home Saturday (June 1) at 1 p.m. with Rev. David Hart, officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard following the funeral service. Private interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens in Cranberry.
