Dorothy Kalinowski, a 2019 graduate of Clarion Area High School, was chosen as the Laurel Festival Queen on Saturday, June 9, at Brookville Area High School.
Contestants were required to write an essay about the ways that Jefferson County could be made a better place. Next, they moved onto the interview and then the pageant where contestants were escorted by local veterans.
“It was so so so fun! The best part about the evening wear is that we were escorted by some of the American Legion members, and that was really special,” Kalinowski told exploreClarion.com.
Kalinowski was very active while she attended Clarion Area High School. She was the president of the school youth council; she participated in Clarion Singers and the choir; and she participated in volleyball in which she was Captain for her senior year. Furthermore, she has played the female lead for the past few years in the school’s music program.
“I really enjoyed the music program,” Kalinowski said.
Kalinowski plans to study dietetics and nutrition at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) so that she can help those diagnosed with Diabetes.
“I was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes in 2017, and I realized that my aspiration in life was to go help other children just like me, and nutrition was the perfect route for it,” explained Kalinowski.
As part of her role as queen, Kalinowski will attend several Brookville Laurel Festival events.
The festival takes place in Brookville from Saturday, June 15, to Sunday, June 23. More information about the event can be found by visiting their Facebook page.
