Miller was officially sworn in by Magisterial District Judge Duane L. Quinn at 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

“Dan Parker is a tough act to follow,” Miller told exploreClarion.com.

“I felt he did a really good job as mayor and an excellent job as the head of the libraries, and he’s really going to be missed.”

According to Miller, he wasn’t entirely surprised when he was approached about taking over for Parker to finish out his term.

“I had heard some rumors, so my wife and I talked about it. It’s pretty hard — when I’ve lived in the community for 41 years, and the community has been so good to me and my family — to say no.”

Miller said that while he “didn’t volunteer,” he couldn’t bring himself to say no to another opportunity to help the local community.

“It’s only for six months. I wouldn’t want to do a full term at my age because that just wouldn’t be practical,” he added.

“I just hope that I can be of service to the community in the position of mayor. I hope that if I can be of service to any citizens, they get ahold of me.”

Miller has a noteworthy history in Clarion.

He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Aquatic Hall of Fame in 2015 for his multi-championship winning, 22-year career as a swimming coach at Clarion University. Miller was also named as the PSAC “Coach of the Year” a total of 13 times (seven women’s, six men’s), and was selected as the NCAA Division II men’s “Coach of the Year” in 1992, the same year in which he received the Steadman Award from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America in recognition of his contribution to the sport of swimming nationally. In 2005, he was inducted into the Clarion University Hall of Fame.

He previously served as a member of the NCAA Swimming Rules Committee, as well as chair for NCAA Division II Swimming (1981-85), CSCAA board member and Officials Coordinator for the Division I National Championships.

Miller has also been remarkably involved in the local community.

He served a term as a Clarion Borough Council member over 20 years ago. He formerly served as treasurer and then chairman of the Clarion County Democrats for a number of years. In addition, he has volunteered on multiple boards including the MHDD Board, the Passavant Chair Trust Board, and most recently the Clarion Borough Storm Water Authority. He is a past president of Choice Enterprises, a non-profit that worked with developmentally challenged individuals.

Miller and his wife, Judy, have owned and operated the landmark Clarion House Bed and Breakfast, located at the corner of South Street and Seventh Avenue, for 27 years.
