LINDSAY STEIS — SENIOR — RIDGWAY

Daughter of: Marcia Steis and Jeffrey Steis
Sports Played: Volleyball, Basketball, Track & Field, Cross Country
Family Members Playing/Played Sports: Her twin sister, Laureen, played basketball as a freshman, and is still a part of the cross country and track and field teams. Her older brother, Nathan, who graduated in 2015, was a part of the basketball, baseball, and football teams. Her mother, Marcia, competed in gymnastics and volleyball. Her father, Jeffrey, was a four-sport athlete who took part in the football, baseball, basketball, and track and field.
2018-19 Highlights: She helped Ridgway win the Elk County Tournament in volleyball and earn a District 9 Class 1A runner-up spot and a berth in the PIAA playoffs … An injury in basketball sidelined her after just eight games and 31 points and kept her out of the track & field season. As a freshman in track and field, she was part of the third-place 4×400-meter relay team and the Elk County Champion in the 400-meter dash.
Post-High School Plans: Her future plans are to attend either Gannon University or Penn State University to major in environmental engineering. She would one day love to play college volleyball whether that be for the college or through intramural athletic programs. After college, she plans to get married and start a family and one day open a rescue shelter.

Q&A With Lindsay Steis

D9Sports: What is your favorite sport to participate in and why?
LS: My favorite sport to play is definitely volleyball because it does not have to be a sport strictly based on height. It is a sport based on the effort you put in, the teamwork and how well the team communicates and works together, the hustle, and the mental toughness. Height is not my strong suit, yet I am not disadvantaged in any way because of that in volleyball.

D9Sports: What is your favorite memory, moment, game from playing high school sports?
LS: For basketball my favorite memory was a game against Elk County Catholic after I hurt my knee and one of my teammates fouled out and we played the remainder of the game with four girls and ended up winning the game! My favorite volleyball memory was winning the Elk County tournaments with my teammates and somehow rotating into the front row for one rotation and the referees not catching it. My favorite track memory was running the first leg of the 4×400-meter relay at districts with a broken leg and getting a 3rd place medal.

D9Sports: Why do you play high school sports?
LS: I have always had a passion for sports and athletics but I love making memories with my teammates and doing something I really love. It also is a great stress relief for me. It takes my mind off the stressful aspects of life and calms me down and really allows me to enjoy life to the fullest.

D9Sports: Who has had the most influence on your athletic career and why?
LS: My teammates and coaches have made me a better person on and off the court and teach me lessons about life that I will use until the day I die. They always encourage me to be the best ME I can be and I couldn’t ask for anything more.

D9Sports: If you could change one thing about high school sports, what would it be and why?
LS: I would eliminate injuries that occur as a result of sports. Some people do not fully understand the countless hours of work kids put into athletics all to be taken away by an injury that will follow them the rest of their lives. It hurts the person injured and the team as well. I know this feeling too well because I have been injured multiple times throughout high school. The most recent and life-changing was during the Elk County Holiday Tournament, I tore my medial and lateral meniscuses, my PCL, and ACL and had to have surgery and go through months of physical therapy to be where I’m at now.

D9Sports: If you could be president for a day, what would be the one major thing you would do?
LS: I would clean up pollution and try to reduce it as much as possible including limiting or banning single-use plastics such as plastic bags, straws, drive-thru cups, etc. and raise awareness about keeping the environment a clean place for current and future generations.

D9Sports: What is your ideal place to live? County, City, Suburb? Why?
LS: A town like Ridgway (but not Ridgway because I don’t think there are a lot of environmental engineers positions) because of the relationships that can be made and the close-knit community where everyone supports one another and are in it for each other.

D9Sports: What would someone who doesn’t know you be surprised to find out about you?
LS: I am a vegetarian and a twin.

D9Sports: What is your strongest subject in school?
LS: Math and Sciences.

D9Sports: If there was one period in history or one event in history you could go back to, what would it be?
LS: wouldn’t go back in time. I try to live life in the present and take each day as a blessing. I have the life I have and I will love every second of it.

D9Sports: What question do you wish I would have asked you? And what is the answer to it?
LS: A lot of people who are unfamiliar with volleyball ask why I’m in a gray jersey when everyone else is wearing maroon? “Why are you wearing a gray jersey?” I am the libero and that is all there is to it.
