OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) — Emergency crews responded to the scene of a minor fire at Cornplanter Square late Thursday afternoon in Oil City.

Oil City Fire Department was dispatched around 3:45 p.m. for a report of a fire at Cornplanter Square, the former Mellon Bank building, along Sycamore Street.

Venango County Planning Commission Executive Director Jason Ruggiero said insulation caught fire on the 5th floor of the building; but firefighters were able to quickly extinguished it.

Workers were gone for the day by the time the fire broke out, according to Ruggiero.

The county purchased Cornplanter Square in 2018 and is currently renovating the building with plans to house a brew pub on the first and second floors and a business incubator on the remaining floors.

Firefighters cleared the scene around 5:00 p.m.

Ruggiero also noted that county maintenance will have to secure the front entrance where firefighters had to break the glass to get into the building.
