Marguerite Lilla Rice

RICEmargueriteMarguerite Lilla Rice, 95, a resident of Whitman Road, Franklin, died peacefully on Sunday, August 4, 2019, in her home, surrounded by family, following a brief illness.

She was born July 2, 1924, in Lovell, Maine, a beloved daughter of the late Sewell and Iva May Smith Butters.

Marguerite graduated high school in Fryeburg, Maine. She was an active and faithful member of The Worden Chapel United Methodist Church.

Marguerite was married to Walter L. Rice, who preceded her in death in 1994. She had worked for more than 20 years as a clerk at the former J.C. Penney store along Liberty Street in downtown Franklin.

She was an avid bowler, having bowled with many local leagues, and in many bowling tournaments throughout the years. She loved to shop, mostly for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s back to school clothing. She enjoyed gardening and canning, as recently as last year; but most importantly, sharing time with her beloved family, who will deeply miss her.

Marguerite is survived by her daughter, Sandra M. Rice Monaco and husband, John of Franklin and by three sons: DeWayne E. Rice and wife, Sandy of Carlton; Kenneth W. Rice and wife, Judy of Seneca and David B. Rice and wife, Linda of Franklin; in addition to 28 grandchildren and many loving great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are three sisters, Marie Eastman of Gloucester, Massachusetts; Barbara Rudolph of Magnolia, Massachusetts and Miriam Eastman of Lovell, Maine; and by a brother, Robert Butters and wife, Betty of Stow, Maine; in addition to many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sons: Steven S. Rice; Richard L. Rice and Harold “Craig” Rice; three brothers, Sewell Butters, Jr; Lawrence Butters and Walter Butters; and by her sister, Helen Johnson.

Family and friends are invited to attend graveside services Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Lupher Chapel Cemetery at Utica.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be directed to Marguerite’s family to help defray funeral expenses.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Timothy E. Hartle Funeral Home, 1328 Elk Street, Franklin.
