CORSICA, Pa. (EYT) — Pennsylvania State Police investigated an animal abuse complaint in Corsica on Thursday afternoon.

Punxsutawney-based State Police say the owners of a Dachshund Chihuahua mix left the dog outside unleashed at a residence on Walnut Street, in Corsica, Jefferson County, around 4:42 p.m. on Thursday, September 5.

According to police, the dog ran towards the next-door neighbor/victim, a 51-year-old Corsica man. The victim allegedly kicked the dog to keep from being bitten. The dog retreated, and a second dog from the same residence, a Chihuahua Miniature Pinscher mix went after the victim. The victim swung items at the second dog to keep from being bitten.

The first dog is suspected to suffer minor to no injuries, police say.

The owners of the animals violated Pennsylvania Statute, “Title 3 P.S. 459-305, Confinement and Housing of Dogs Not Part of a Kennel.” The victim did not want charges filed, according to police.

The Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement does not oversee or have jurisdiction over animal cruelty. PA dog wardens received humane officer training, which provides them with knowledge about what to look for in kennels and other situations where animal cruelty may be present. If a warden suspects cruelty, they will refer the case to a humane society police officer or police officer for an official investigation.

PSP Punxsutawney reminds the public: “If you suspect animal abuse and would like to report it, you should contact your local humane society police officer or local police station. In the absence of local police, contact the Pennsylvania State Police.”
