Brenna Campbell ClarionCLARION, Pa. (D9Sports) – Using a strong serving game and a balanced offensive attack, Clarion beat visiting Clarion-Limestone, 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-12) Tuesday night.

The Lady Cats strength was in their serve where they recorded 16 aces led by four from Brenna Campbell and three apiece from Jordan Best, KK Girvin and Korrin Burns.

“Serving is one of the most important parts of our game,” Campbell, who ran the offense with 29 set assists while also adding a kill and three digs while being named the Hager Paving Player of the Game, said. “I know we are strong servers, so anytime we get a chance to serve tough is when we really get into teams’ heads.”

The tough part of receiving a serve from Clarion (5-0), is the serve tends to just make it over the net for diving towards the floor quickly.

“It’s pretty hard (to perfect that serve),” Campbell said. “Sometimes, I don’t even get that. (For) a very good float serve, you have to hit it directly on the center of the ball. I think a lot of the girls on our team have done that very well.”

When C-L was able to receive the Clarion serve, the Lady Lions (2-3) faced a Lady Cats defense that dug 21 balls while only allowing three C-L kills, none after the first set.

And once Clarion transitioned to offense, Campbell had multiple options to set the ball to.

Burns recorded a team-best 14 kills with Maddie Schill and Kait Constantino each adding seven. Burns was particularly strong in the first and third sets recording six kills in each set. Constantino chipped in a team-best eight digs.

“We really work on our offense running,” Campbell said. “This year we have sped it up. I really need to trust my hitters, and I do. I know they are great, and I know they can hit whatever ball I set them.”

Ruby Smith had a strong night for C-L with two kills, five digs and a block, while Janelle Pezzuti added a kill and three digs and Brooke Kessler two blocks.

Clarion returns to action Thursday at Keystone, while C-L is off until Monday when it travels to Redbank Valley.
