Police: Driver Falls Asleep at Wheel, Crashes into Pickup on Route 66

JENKS TWP., Pa. (EYT) — A driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a pickup truck this morning on Route 66 in Jenks Township.

According to Marienville-based State Police, 27-year-old James C. Emmott, of Jamestown, New York, and 27-year-old Justin M. Schmader, of Lucinda, were involved in the collision.

Police say around 6:10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 1, Emmott was driving a 2003 Toyota Matrix south on Route 66 in Jenks Township, Forest County, and fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle traveled into the oncoming travel lane.

Schmader, who was traveling north on Route 66, attempted to avoid contact with the Toyota, but his 2003 Chevrolet Silverado was struck on its rear portion by the Toyota.

The Toyota subsequently overturned and traveled off the southbound lane of the roadway and came to its final rest on its roof.

The pickup rotated approximately 90 degrees and came to a rest in the southbound lane of the roadway.

Emmott suffered suspected injuries by refused transport, according to police.

Schmader was not injured.

Both drivers were using seat belts.

Emmott was charged with a traffic violation.

Marienville Volunteer Fire Department, Clarion Hospital Ambulance, and Snyder’s Towing assisted at the scene.
