CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — Sources have confirmed that an investigation is underway into the theft of a large sum of money from the Clarion County District Attorney’s Office.

A source close to the situation confirmed that the investigation is related to the alleged theft of money from the Clarion County District Attorney’s Office by a former County employee. The source confirmed that the total amount was significant and the alleged thefts date back several years.

District Attorney Mark Aaron confirmed an ongoing investigation into “financial matters” in the District Attorney’s office.

In response to questions from exploreClarion.com regarding reports of an employee termination allegedly related to money missing from an account managed by the District Attorney’s office, district attorney Mark Aaron stated, “An employee being let go is a personnel matter and I can’t really comment on that. Any financial issues have been referred to the attorney general and at this point it’s a pending investigation, so I can’t really say much. It’s in the hands of attorney general.”

The County announced separation of employment with the employee on September 23, 2019.

The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General is often asked to handle the investigation into any case where the investigation could be considered a conflict of interest for a District Attorney’s office in Pennsylvania.

A representative of the Attorney General’s office was unable to confirm the investigation but did state that they are aware of the situation.
