The acoustic ensemble welcomed everybody with the song “Simple Man.”
Other songs were the “Star-Spangled Banner,” performed by the high school band and the Sensations.
The third-grade class performed “Thank you, Soldier” after which the Sensations sang “Glory.” The dance team presented “American Soldier.”
The speaker was Terry McCullough Platoon Sergeant First Platoon, Alpha Battery 1/109th Field Artillery for the Army National Guard. McCollough is a former teacher at C-L High School and the current Athletic Director at Union High School.
McCullough led students in the 22 push-up challenge. It’s a nationwide effort to bring awareness to the fact that, according to statistics released by the Veterans Administration, 22 Veterans die by suicide each day. Challenge participants agree to perform 22 push-ups per day for 22 days, representing the former military members who died that day. Many of those who participate post their push-ups to social media.
The high school band played “Salute to America’s Finest,” a medley of the official songs of each branch of the military. Visiting Veterans were asked to stand when the band played the song of the branch in which they served.
As the program was dismissed the veterans lined the walls of the hall outside of the gymnasium. Students were encouraged to stop and thank the Veterans as they went back to class.
