BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – A portion of Interstate 80 in Jefferson County remains closed following an accident involving a propane tanker and another tractor-trailer.

Sources say the accident happened around 8:00 a.m. this morning, near the 80 mile marker on I-80 Eastbound.

The accident involved two tractor-trailers – a propane tanker and a second tractor-trailer hauling food products.

Heavy fire was visible at the scene of the crash shortly after the accident took place. It has since been extinguished.

Scanner reports indicate the fire did not endanger the propane tanker.

Pine Creek, Brookville, and Warsaw Township Fire Companies are on the scene.

A Hazmat crew is also on the scene.

Corsica Volunteer Fire Department has shut down the interstate at the Exit 78 on ramp.

Motorists are being redirected at the Corsica exit and taking Route 322 through Brookville causing heavy traffic backups.

At least one person was injured in the crash.

At 8:34 a.m., dispatchers were attempting to locate a landing zone for STAT Medevac, and at 8:46 a.m. it landed, but the location has not been provided.

As of 1:56 p.m., the roadway remained closed as crews work to clear the scene.

Around 12:45 p.m., a second accident involving a fire was reported on Interstate 80 Eastbound near mile marker 89.

Around 1:44 p.m., Brookville Police issued a press release saying they expect the roadway to remain closed for another 4 to 6 hours.

Authorities are asking motorists to avoid traveling in the area, if possible. In addition to Interstate 80, traffic backups are being reported on Route 322, Route 28, and Route 36. Alternate routes include SR-66 North to SR-36 to SR-322 East and SR-66 South to SR-28 North to SR-322 East.

Specific details on either accident have not yet been released.

As of 6:55 p.m., a portion of Interstate-80 is still closed, according to PSP Punxsutawney.
