Callen Double-Double Propels Lions to Victory Over Wolves

FRILLS CORNERS, Pa. ( – Hager Paving Player of the Game Dan Callen recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds while adding six assists and at least three blocks to lift Clarion-Limestone to a 73-48 win at North Clarion Friday night.

“Dan has been working hard,” C-L head coach Joe Ferguson said. “He has stepped up as one of our leaders this year. He just continues to improve as we move on. I think you are going to see that about every night. It’s going to be tough to shut down a guy with his height and his agility and his work ethic right now.”

The Lions put the game away early using a 33-3 first-half ending run to take a 39-15 halftime lead.

The run game after a slow start for C-L (4-0 overall, 2-0 KSAC North) that saw it trail the Wolves (0-4, 0-2) 11-6 four minutes into the game.

“We were just lethargic both offensively and defensively,” Ferguson said. “I really believe starting out the ball games, we aren’t taking good shot selections. That gets us into a bad flow.”

The flow started to click, especially on defense, for the Lions midway through the first quarter, though, and they went on the run that saw them hold North Clarion without a basket for a stretch of 10:09 while outscoring the Wolves 27-1 during that time.

“I was extremely pleased the way we played defensively,” Ferguson said. “That was actually one of the best quarters of defense I have seen, even with the teams I’ve had the last couple of years. As a team, and also with the rotation of players I put in, playing about 10 players during that run, I think they played some of the best defense I have seen for a while.”

Callen played a big role in the run scoring 11 of his points during the spurt, but it was really the unselfish nature of the Lions play that made the difference. C-L assisted on over ½ of its 30 baskets in the game with at least eight different Lions picking up assists and 10 of the 12 C-L players who played scoring.

“We’ve worked hard on that,” Ferguson said. “RJ (Laugand) really started us a few years back understanding the distribution of the ball. We preach that and talk that a lot. I was extremely pleased with giving the ball up at the right times and getting some easy hoops. I was real pleased with the distribution.”

Taylor Smith added 14 points and five rebounds, while Noah Rankin had 10 points and Devin Beers nine.Freshman point guard Julian Laugand didn’t score but recorded nine rebounds and at least four helpers.

Zayn Hargenrader, despite being in foul trouble all night, led North Clarion with 17 points.

The Wolves second half was better as they were only outscored by one, 34-33, with Hargenrader scoring 12 points after the break.
