Karns City Wins KSAC Girls Title, 46-31, Over North Clarion
CLARION, Pa. (D9Sports) – Karns City rode its defense to a third straight KSAC Championship forcing 22 North Clarion turnovers on its way to a 46-31 win over the She-Wolves in the KSAC Title game at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym Friday.
“I thought we did a good job of forcing them to spots,” Karns City head coach Dave Kerschbaumer said. “When we did we got them in good spots, and we made them work all night long. When teams work, they wear down a little bit. As soon as the body goes the mind goes. I thought we got that pretty early in the third quarter there.”
Karns City wasted little time putting the game away and trailed only once early, 4-3, before taking a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 26-12 halftime lead thanks in large part to the defense which forced 14 of the turnovers before halftime leading to 16 points.
“We knew we needed to have tight defense so no passes could get inside to them,” sophomore point guard Emily Hegedus, who had a game-tying high of 15 points said.
Hegedus’ senior partner in crime, LeeAnn Gibson, was a catalyst to the defense coming away with seven steals in the game while tying Hegedus for the game-lead in scoring with 15 points.
“It’s so nice,” Hegedus said of playing alongside Gibson. “If she gets the rebound and starts dribbling, I sprint off and she will pass it to me. If I get the rebound, she will sprint off, and I will past it to her. It’s just really nice to have her.”
Karns City’s offensive stats overall weren’t pretty.
The Lady Gremlins shot just 38.5 percent from the floor and were only 2 of 10 from 3-point range and 4 of 8 from the free-throw line.
But they took care of the ball, only six turnovers in the game, shared the ball, 13 assists on 20 baskets, and held their own on the boards only getting out rebounded 32-27 by the physical She-Wolves.
“The girls do so much in the offseason to get to where they are,” Kerschbaumer said. “They expect it out of themselves. This is what we are striving to do every year, to get to this spot.”
Hegedus knows that feeling very well. She was only an eighth grader when Karns City started this streak of KSAC Championships, but her older sister, Annie, was a junior on that team and a senior on last year’s team.
This year, Emily stepped in to fill Annie’s role at point guard.
“Knowing my sister had graduated, I needed to step up and take her position,” Hegedus said. “I feel I had to push it for her to win the third title.”
North Clarion got 13 points and eight rebounds from Abbie Schmader and eight points and 15 rebounds from Tori Obenrader.
Both teams move into the District 9 playoffs.
Karns City will play the winner of the Brookville vs. Kane game in the District 9 Class AA semifinals, while North Clarion awaits the winner of the Union vs. Smethport game in the District 9 Class A quarterfinals.
