Jefferson County Man Injured in Motorcycle Vs. Car Crash After Slowing for Bear Cubs

BELL TWP., Pa. (ETY) — Police say a Jefferson County man was injured in a crash involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle after he slowed down for two bear cubs along the roadway in Bell Township.

According to police, the crash took place on Airport Road just north of Weaver Road around 5:50 p.m. on November 9.

Police say 47-year-old Kevin L. Koppenhaver, of Reynoldsville, was operating a 2021 Yamaha Tenere motorcycle traveling north on Airport Road when he slowed down after noticing two bear cubs on the side of the roadway.

According to police, 75-year-old Gary L. Hollenbaugh, of Punxsutawney, was operating a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander traveling behind Koppenhaver, following too closely, and struck Koppenhaver’s motorcycle from behind.

Koppenhaver was wearing a helmet.

He suffered suspected serious injuries and was transported to Punxsutawney Hospital by Jefferson County EMS.

Hollenbaugh was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.

Hollenbaugh was cited for following too closely.
