Join Nature Abounds on Saturday, May 19, 2012, for the first annual Forest Summit for education, inspiration, and networking in Central Pennsylvania!

At the Forest Summit, we’ll look at the issues the Pennsylvania forest is facing such as:

• hydraulic “fracking”,
• wild animal rehabilitation,
• climate change,
• environmental health,
• urban sprawl,
• invasive plants/pests, and
• what citizens can do to help.

We’ll also discuss public lands, recreation opportunities, as well as your rights and responsibilities as Pennsylvania citizens.

Guest speakers will discuss (in addition to the above mentioned) many varied topics from forest health to native tree species also wildlife and natural habitats and even how modern technology can fit into your conservation efforts.

You can also network with other activists and volunteers from around the state, and possibly from surrounding states as well.

Also during the gathering, Nature Abounds will launch our new Keepers of the Forest Initiative and Citizen Watch opportunity.

Join University and community members for a day of fellowship celebrating good neighbors, families and friends.

Schedule of events:
10:00 am Opening ceremonies
10:30 am Activities and Family Olympics
12:30 pm Activities and live entertainment
1:30 pm   Closing ceremonies (Good Neighbor Pledge and Neighborhood Star Awards)

Light refreshments will be provided and the Gemmell Food Court Window will be open if participants wish to purchase lunch or snacks.

The 3rd Annual Clarion Brain Safety Fair will be held from noon to 3 p.m. April 14 at the Clarion Mall. Students from Clarion University National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association, faculty from the communication sciences and disorders department, members of the Clarion Area Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group and community members will provide information and demonstrations to promote increased brain safety awareness.

Activities will include egg safety drop, simulations of the effects of brain injuury on all of the senses, bicycle safety education and fitting and distrubution of free, quality bike helmets.

Clarion Area Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group and members of the Clarion University NSSLHA, in cooperation with the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania and the IU6 BrainSTEPS team are sponsoring and hosting numerous brain safety awareness events this spring.

According to the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania, more than 4,000 of Pennsylvania’s children survive traumatic brain injuries significant enough to require hospitalization each year. Many of these children are left with life-altering difficulties in physical, cognitive or behavioral functioning.

The brain safety fair is sponsored and funded by donations from the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania, Clarion University NSSLHA and a Clarion University Community Partnership Grant between the CU Speech and Hearing Clinic and Intermediate Unit #6 BrainSTEPS.

NSSLHA is a pre-professional organization for students studying communication sciences and disorders at Clarion University.

The Clarion Area Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group, also called TBI Tuesdays, usually meets at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month in room 36 of Keeling Health Center, at the corner of Wilson Avenue and Wood Street. Survivors of traumatic brain injury and their families and friends are invited.
