Clarion Completes Undefeated Regular Season with Win Over Brookville

title=CLARION, Pa. (D9sports.com) – John Katis threw three touchdown passes, including two to Camron Kirkland, as Clarion finished off its sixth unbeaten, untied season in school history with a 34-6 win over visiting Brookville Friday night at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium.

“It’s awesome,” Clarion’s 24th year head coach Larry Wiser, who has coached three of those unbeaten regular-season teams, said. “There aren’t many 10-0 teams out there. It’s quite an accomplishment.”

Katis was 7 of 21 for 123 yards and the three scores and sits just 17 yards shy of the school single-season passing record of 1,263 yards set by Drew Zwald in 1968. The three scoring passes give him 18 on the year expanding on his school record.

“(Offensive coordinator) Todd Smith has done a great job of getting good balance out of our offense,” Wiser said. “And Johnny Katis has been outstanding at quarterback lately.”

Kirkland, meanwhile, had two catches for 73 yards grabbing touchdown passes of 40 and 33 yards from Katis. He has scored six touchdowns in the past two weeks including his first four receiving scores of the season.

Meanwhile, fellow receiver Cody Hearst had three catches for 49 yards including a 29-yard score and set the single-season Bobcat receiving yards mark with 573 breaking Kirkland’s one-year old record of 554.

“It means a lot,” Hearst, a junior, said about setting the record.

“Especially since Cam Kirkland had it. I’d like to dedicate it to him. He taught me a lot last year and made me the receiver I am.”

T.J. Armstrong added a 16-yard touchdown run for Clarion, while Damien Slike had a 15-yard scoring run.

The Bobcats scored three touchdowns in a span of 2:43 in the second quarter thanks to a pair of Brookville (6-4) turnovers and a Clarion kickoff the Bobcats recovered at the Brookville 29-yard line. That took a 7-0 Clarion lead and turned it into a 28-0 halftime lead.

Zach Vroman, who rushed for a game-high 147 yards on 13 carries, broke the ice for Brookville with a 98-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, the longest scoring play in Raider history, to cut the lead to 28-6. But Clarion answered 40 seconds later on the Slike touchdown run.

In all, Clarion’s five scoring drives took 5:22 seconds and just 14 plays.

Brookville turned the ball over four times not including the kickoff play.

NOTES — Clarion’s other unbeaten, untied regular-season teams were in 2000 (9-0), 1999 (9-0), 1961 (8-0), 1954 (8-0) and 1947 (9-0). The Bobcats were also 7-0-2 in 1986. Clarion has been 10-0 twice before winning its first playoff games in both 1999 and 2000 before losing in the District 9 championship games . Clarion will host Smethport in the opening round of the District 9 Class A playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium .

Brookville will play Kane in the D9 Class AA playoffs next weekend. The Raiders are the third seed and will most likely be traveling to Kane, although a final decision on the site has not been determined.
