Rumors of School Shooting Threats in Warren County; Superintendent Issues Statement

WARREN COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) – Rumors circulating Thursday about a potential school shooting and other threats in Warren County School District are not credible, according to school officials and law enforcement officers.

Warren County School District officials say they have been in contact with law enforcement regarding the rumored threats and have found that all rumored threats are not credible. The school district says they’re working with law enforcement officials to continue to monitor the situation.

Officials did not specify which school(s) within the district were rumored to be targeted.

The following statement was released by Warren County School District Superintendent Brandon L. Hufnagel:

December 20, 2012
Good afternoon,

Rumors have been circulating about a potential school shooting and other threats. I assure you that the administration has been taking this very seriously. We have and will continue to investigate all such rumors as student safety is our number one concern. We have been in contact with local law enforcement agencies, and at this time all such rumors have been found to not be credible. No schools have been locked down and continue to operate with security procedures in place. I have instructed building and Central Office administrators to continue monitoring the situation and work with the local law enforcement agencies. Even though the rumors are not credible, it still is imperative that we continue to take them seriously.

A letter was also sent home with students notifying parents of our concerns and plans as we move forward. All district buildings will continue to operate on a normal schedule on Friday, December 21st.

It is important to understand that we can not divulge our security procedures as this potentially compromises the safety of the students.

The following additional precautions will be taken tomorrow:

• All police departments have been contacted, and we have requested that they be on site at each building.
• Additional staff will be present at each building monitoring the interior and exterior of the school.
• Central Office staff and other administrators will be assigned to a building to help monitor.
• All assemblies and large gatherings of students will be cancelled.
• Any and all misbehavior of students will not be tolerated. Students who exhibit any behavior issues will be disciplined immediately.
• No back packs will be permitted in school.

If you have any additional information that may help us track down these unfortunate rumors please contact me at (814) 723-6900.

Sincerely,

Brandon L. Hufnagel
Superintendent
