SPONSORED: Dr. Cynthia Hoffmeier Discusses Acne Care

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) – Dr. Cynthia Hoffmeier of Simply Skin Medical Spa submitted the following article on acne care.

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that affects men and women of all ages, and contrary to popular belief is not caused by poor hygiene and greasy foods. Acne has disfigured and destroyed the self-confidence of a significant number of people.

Simply Skin has provided acne care to our community for 25 years, and we would like to take a few minutes to explain the cause and best treatments for this very common condition.

Acne is both an inherited and hormonal problem. If your family had acne, you are likely to be plagued, and hormonal changes at puberty trigger the progression.

You may have small bumps, small or large white heads, or large and painful cysts, and “it’s all acne.”

The products we use to treat acne include Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, and Retinol, along with topical antibiotics such as Erythromycin, Clindamycin, and Sodium Sulfacetamide. Although these are beneficial, can also cause significant inflammation. At Simply Skin, we are taking a more holistic approach to treating acne, preventing scarring, and increasing the self-confidence of our patients.

The best acne treatment can be accomplished using the correct topical products and may enlist medications and supplements that alter the disease course naturally.

Topical products must provide moisture, be microencapsulated and timed release, and improve the microbiome of the skin.

Moisturization not only prevents dry and dead skin from piling up, but is soothing and allows us to maintain a healthy barrier of the skin. Our moisturizers are non-acne forming, oil-free, and our morning products include SPF.

Microencapsulated refers to small molecules that better penetrate the skin surface, resulting in less superficial irritation. Time released allows the slow release of the products over several hours instead of dumping an irritant all at once. Retinol is the number one acne product in the world, and all the Retinols we use at Simply Skin are prescription strength without the irritation. (Skin Medica, Alastin, and Avene)

The microbiome of the skin is the natural bacteria that we were born with, which have been destroyed by environmental factors such as sun and pollution, harsh soaps, make-up, and hormonal changes. Restoring the normal bacteria may be the only treatment necessary to resolve an acne problem.

At Simply Skin, we use the Biojuve Microbiome System which has been remarkable in acne care.

Hormonal imbalance greatly contributes to acne severity and rebalancing changes can greatly improve both physical and emotional health. Testosterone in both women and men is a contributory factor to increasing inflammatory oils that cause acne, and suppressing this can be performed with a prescribed oral supplement and topical medication.

Nutrients which include Niacin, Curcumin, Zinc, Vitamin D, and others can be very beneficial in decreasing inflammation and oil in the skin.

Oral antibiotics may be necessary initially, given in low doses to act as an anti-inflammatory, but only used for a limited time.

In-office treatments are very beneficial such as Acne Peels, Diamond Glow Acne Facials, Acne Masks, and laser therapies with Spectra MD, and Clarity II.

The success of treating acne includes a commitment to a twice-daily skin care regimen and no picking or popping of pimples.
