Knox Man Victim of $785,000 Sweepstakes Scam

MONROE TWP., Pa. (EYT) – A Knox man was the victim of a recent sweepstakes scam, according to Clarion-based State Police.

Police say around 12:00 p.m. on August 23, a known Knox man reported being the victim of the scam.

The man said he received a mailing from American Family Sweepstakes and Promotions stating that he won $785,000 in prize money. He was reportedly contacted by phone and swindled into making payments totaling $4,800.00 in order to receive the alleged prize.

In a release issued Tuesday afternoon by Clarion-based State Police Tfc. Graf reminded residents to be “cognizant of the many types of phone, mail, and online scams.”

The release continued, “If you are unsure of what action to take regarding strange phone calls or mailings, wait and contact a family member, friend or the police.”

“Do not make hurried decisions or be bullied into paying money or giving personal information for a promise of a prize.”
