Unlicensed Cats May Be Executed Under New Bethlehem Borough Council Proposal

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. (EYT) — Feral and nuisance cats can be a bigger problem than some might imagine, and the New Bethlehem Borough Council is seeking ways to correct the situation.

At their recent council meeting, some council members discussed the issue of requiring pet owners to license their cats.

There have been complaints about cats causing property damage, running loose, and making a general nuisance to home and property owners.

A recently published article in the Leader-Vindicator indicated that borough council member Terry Mateer suggested that cats that are trapped and without the proper contact information “will be executed.”

Borough Secretary Rich McGarry said that its solicitor, Sarah Seidle, is researching the issue to see what or if anything can be done.

It’s not the first time the Borough has considered an ordinance to have cats licensed.

More than a decade ago, it was considered, but that was it.

According to animallaw.info, Rhode Island is the only state in the country that requires cats to be licensed.
