Two Injured in Interstate 80 Semi vs. SUV Crash

CLINTON TWP., Pa. (EYT) — Franklin-based State Police say around 6:44 p.m. on September 17, a two-vehicle accident occurred on Interstate 80, near the 35 mile marker, in Clinton Township, Venango County.

According to police, 44-year-old Ablasse Guira, of East Orange, N.J., and 30-year-old Edwin Cruz-Astacio, of Bronx, N.Y., were involved in the collision.

Police say the crash occurred as a 2004 Ford Escape — driven by Guira — was traveling east on I-80 in the right lane and began to hydroplane. Guira attempted to right the vehicle but was unable to as the vehicle turned south, traveling through an on-ramp and then left the roadway.

The Ford traveled through the grass area with a slight counter clockwise spin ending in a position perpendicular to the roadway, facing the road. At this time, Guira moved the vehicle forward towards the roadway and traveled across a portion on the on-ramp and into the right lane without checking to see if the lane was clear, according to police.

A 2015 Freightliner Cascadia — driven by Cruz-Astacio — was traveling east on I-80 in the right lane. The front passenger corner of the semi struck the front driver’s side of the Ford, causing the Ford to spin clockwise. The Ford then left the roadway facing south coming to a final rest against a group of trees.

The semi continued forward eventually leaving the roadway and coming to a final rest on the south side of the road against a group of trees.

Superior Ambulance and Clintonville Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene while Hovis Auto Wrecking towed both vehicles.

Neither driver was injured.

A passenger in Guira’s vehicle — 26-year-old Domonike N. Henry, of Newark, N.J. and a passenger in Cruz-Astacio’s semi — 36-year-old Ramon Gonzales-Astacio, of Philadelphia, Pa. — were transported to Grove City Medical Center for injuries of unknown severity.

Both drivers and Henry were using seat belts.

Gonzales-Astacio was not wearing a seat belt.

Guira was charged with a traffic violation.
