There is Still Time to Register for the 2016 Clarion Super Draft/Wendy Charrie Memorial Classic Slow-Pitch Softball Tourney Being Held Saturday and Sunday

SHIPPENVILLE, Pa. — There is still time to register for the 2016 Clarion Super Draft / Wendy Charrie Memorial Classic Slow-Pitch Softball Tournament being held Saturday and Sunday at the Clarion County Park.

Pre-registration for the tournament, which is in its fourth year, can be done by looking up the Facebook Event page: 2016 Clarion Super Draft/Wendy Charrie Memorial Classic, where individuals should mark that they are going to the event.

After confirming their pre-registration players should arrive at the Clarion County Park prior to 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, and register for the draft by paying a registration fee of $20. Players will be placed in the draft for team placement. The draft is a blind draw of names that places individuals on teams in the order of the names being pulled.

The first games will start after the completion of the player draft at approximately 9:30 a.m. and play continues Saturday with a round-robin format of games until approximately 5 p.m. depending on the number of teams. The tournament will then continue with Day Two Sunday, Sept. 25, with a double-elimination format tournament based on team records from Saturday. Sunday’s action starts at approximately 9 a.m. and will continue through the day until approximately 4 p.m.

The inspiration behind the event is in the memory of the late Wendy Jo Charrie, who passed away in 2010 from an infection she contracted and could not fight off. The money collected is donated to an agency that promote the education for fighting infections diseases.

According to Scott Charrie, Wendy Jo’s husband, the tournament is an extension of charity tournaments of the same nature he has played in in the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Areas.

“We attract players from our local area including Clarion, Knox, Oil City, Brookville, DuBois and Clearfield,” Scott Charrie said. “We also get people from Greensburg, Penn Hills, Pittsburgh, Strongville, Ohio, and Cleveland.”

In addition to the tournament, there is a Chinese Auction with items donated by businesses and individuals being raffled off. There is also a concession stand.

Along with the game being played, there will be skill competitions including a home-run derby, a pitching accuracy contest, a throwing accuracy contest and a cornhole tournament.
