Clarion County Recipe of the Day: Sandy’s Buttermilk Biscuits

Serve these tasty biscuits with your favorite stew!

Sandy’s Buttermilk Biscuits

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup shortening
2/3 cup buttermilk
1 large egg, lightly beaten

Directions

~Preheat oven to 450°.

~In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk; stir just until moistened.

~Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead gently 8 to 10 times. Pat dough into a 10×4-in. rectangle. Cut rectangle lengthwise in half; cut crosswise to make 10 squares.

~Place 1 in. apart on an ungreased baking sheet; brush tops with egg. Bake 8 to 10 minutes (or until golden brown).

~Serve warm.

~Makes 10 biscuits.
