CUP Wrestling Can’t Handle Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Clarion wrestling team tried to make headway early on, but was ultimately unable to gain a foothold as they fell 27-12 to Lock Haven on the road on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles (4-8, 1-3 PSAC) will have a chance to rebound quickly when they host Ohio at Tippin Gymnasium tomorrow evening.

Four Golden Eagles claimed victory on Thursday night, though Lock Haven was buoyed by a pair of pins early in the match to secure the team score. The team event was in fact not decided until relatively late, when Kyle Shoop scored a tech fall over Jake Keller in the 149-pound bout.

Scott Marmoll was the first Clarion wrestler to taste victory, defeating 28th-ranked Corey Hazel in the 184-pound bout. The veteran Marmoll was able to outlast the wily redshirt freshman Hazel, picking up a takedown in the third and keeping Hazel at bay through the rest of the bout to secure the impressive victory.

Nationally-ranked Jake Gromacki was the next Golden Eagle to win, defeating Jake Field by decision. He outscored Field 5-0 through the end of three periods and tacked on the riding time point to earn a 6-0 victory.

The highlight of the night came in the 141-pound bout that featured two nationally-ranked contenders, Clarion’s Brock Zacherl and Lock Haven’s Ronnie Perry. Perry led 2-0 at one point but Zacherl notched a takedown in the waning seconds of the second period to tie the score. Zacherl started the third period in the down position and escaped for a 3-2 advantage, then managed to hold off Perry in the remainder of the time for the win.

Wrapping up the wins for Clarion was Evan Delong, who shook off a minor slump to earn a 4-3 decision over Jared Siegrist. Delong reversed Siegrist to tie the score at 2-2, and then got an escape to take a 3-2 advantage later in the bout. The score was tied 3-3 at the end of regulation, but thanks to the riding time advantage Delong claimed the decision.
