UPDATE: Large Piece of Flying Ice Strikes Driver, Causes Pile-Up on Clarion River Bridge

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — Emergency personnel responded to the scene of a multiple-vehicle accident Thursday on Interstate 80 westbound in Clarion.

According to Clarion-based State Police, the accident happened around 4:40 p.m. on the Clarion River Bridge near mile marker 61. An unknown vehicle was traveling east on I-80 when a large piece of ice flew off the vehicle and hit a 2013 Honda Pilot driven by Kathryn Gunter, 38, of Erie.

The ice hit the windshield of the Pilot and entered the vehicle, struck Gunter and temporarily blinded her. Gunter stopped her vehicle on the bridge, causing a 4-vehicle crash behind Gunter’s vehicle, but not involving her. Then, another 2-vehicle crash happened behind the 4-vehicle wreck.

Debra Bull, 52, of Erie, was a passenger in Gunter’s vehicle and was not injured.

A total of eight vehicles were involved in the crash. Multiple injuries were reported, but no other details on the accidents that happened behind the Pilot vehicle were available.

According to Clarion County 911 the scene was cleared at 12:37 a.m. Friday.
