CUP Sports Roundup: Men’s Golf Seventh at Coaches Invite; Tennis Swept by IUP

CROFTON, Md. — The Clarion University men’s golf team finished seventh overall with a team score of 962 (+98) Tuesday afternoon at the Coaches Invitational Classic at Crofton Country Club.

The Blue and Gold will return to action on April 2nd when they head to Wheeling, Wv. for the Ogelbay Intercollegiate Invitational.

The Blue and Gold shot a 322 (+34) as a team Tuesday afternoon and had several golfers finish inside the top 30 overall individual leader board. Nathan Sandberg wrapped up the two-day event in a three-way tie for 21st overall with a score of 235, carding a 79 after posting back-to-back rounds at 78 on day one.

Mitch Faulkner and Loren Dukate followed closely behind, tied for 29th and 31st, respectively. Faulkner continued his steady three-round improvement with his best score on the final day of competition, carding a 77 after an 81 and an 80 in rounds one and two. Dukate finished with a 239 after shooting an 83 on the final day to take home a share of 31st.

Rounding things out was Cameron Kockler (252) and Joe Kerrigan (253) to take home 45th and 46th, respectively.

TENNIS SWEPT BY IUP

CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion tennis team returned home for its first match at Campbell Courts of the spring season, falling by a 9-0 score to the IUP Crimson Hawks. The Golden Eagles (5-6, 0-2 PSAC) will host California (Pa.) on Saturday.

The Crimson Hawks came out and performed well in the damp conditions on Tuesday, taking all nine matches on the court for the shutout win. IUP claimed straight-sets decisions in all six singles matches and also controlled action in doubles play.

The doubles tandem of Alivia Arnold and Maria Snyder have been excellent of late but faltered in the No. 1 doubles match, losing 8-1 to Jarka Petercakova and Luise von Agris. Michelle Petrilla and Allie Probst battled but also fell 8-1 to Raquel Gonzalez and Rachel Wood.
