Catholic Daughters’ Third Book Review Set for May 3

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court #2454, of the Immaculate Conception Church in Clarion, announce their final Spring Book Review and Luncheon for this season will be presented on Wednesday, May 3.

Doors will open at 11:45 a.m.

A light luncheon will be served before the review.

The review is scheduled from noon to 1:00 p.m.

Everyone is welcome.

The reviewer, Father B. LaMounte “Monty” Sayers, has been the pastor of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clarion since August of 2006. A former Clarion resident, Fr. Sayers was the director of the Catholic Campus Ministry at Clarion University from 1987 to 1995.

Fr. Sayers has served at St. Eusebius Church in East Brady and was an elementary teacher. He also served as a pastor of St. Hippolyte Church in Frenchtown and Our Lady of Lourdes in Cochranton.

Fr. Sayers will be reviewing The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. This book is the winner of multiple awards, including being named as one of the New York Times Book Reviews Ten Best Books of 2016. The Underground Railroad follows the plight of Cora, who was a young slave on an estate in Georgia. Cora suffers even more when her mother flees the plantation, leaving her behind to fend for herself. Set around 1812, Cora’s story is one of cruel and inhumane treatment suffered by the slaves-whippings, public executions, and living without dignity and honor.

The review and luncheon will be held in Immaculate Conception’s Our Lady of Clarion Center in the rectory basement. The basement can be entered on the Madison Street (alley) side of the building.

A monetary donation will be accepted at the door. Donations of non-perishable food items for local food banks are encouraged.

There will be items raffled and door prizes given.

The proceeds will benefit the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which will help the United Way provide books for local preschool children and Immaculate Conception’s Christmas Angel Tree.
