Monday’s HS Softball Roundup: Kennedy DeMatteis Leads Moniteau over Redbank Valley

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. (D9Sports) — With Kennedy DeMatteis leading the way with her bat and her arm, Moniteau overcame a slow start at the plate to get a 9-1 win at Redbank Valley in a battle of two of the top teams in District 9 Class 2A.

DeMatteis was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and five RBIs at the plate for the heavily favored Lady Warriors, while she was just a dominant in the circle.

The senior, who did see her scoreless inning streak broken at 38 innings and her streak of not allowing an earned run broke at 48 innings when Lexi Holt tripled in Rebecca Kunselman with two outs in the fifth, was dominant again allowing the one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Kennedy’s twin sister, Kristina DeMatteis, added a hit and two RBIs for Moniteau, while Gabby Stewart was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Cortney Claypoole went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored and Dolcey Shunk was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The game was scoreless until the third when Moniteau scored twice on singles by Stewart and Kennedy DeMatteis. The Lady Warriors then broke the game open with a four-run fifth that was highlighted by a two-run Kennedy DeMatteis double.

Alyssa Burkett took the loss giving up nine runs, six earned, on 10 hits. She also walked a batter.

KARNS CITY 8, A-C VALLEY 4

CHICORA, Pa. — Mackenzie Dunn, Taylor Ekis and Katie Neff each drove in two runs to lead Karns City to an 8-4 win over visiting A-C Valley.

Dunn was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk for the Lady Gremlins, while Ekis was 2-for-3 and Neff 1-for-3.

Kylee Eaton led A-C Valley going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Katie Stalker was also 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI for the Lady Falcons while Cami McNany was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Logan Byers got the win going four innings allowing an unearned run on three hits while striking out four. Makenzie Shay picked up the save going three innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five.

Sydnie Schmidt suffered the loss going 4 ⅓ innings allowing eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits and two walks while striking out one.

CLARION 19, FOREST AREA 3, 4 INNINGS; 15-0; 4 INNINGS

MARIENVILLE, Pa. — Clarion outscored Forest Area 34-3 in getting a pair of four-inning wins in a doubleheader sweep of the Fires at East Forest.

The Lady Cats won Game One 19-3 in four innings and Game Two 15-0 in four innings.

In the opener, Clarion had seven extra-base hits including a home run from Maya Thornton, a triple by Sydney Kiser, two doubles from Cora Zerfoss and a double apiece from Alexis Constantino, Lindsey Kemmer and Tori Vega.

Alexis Constantino was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, Vega was 1-for-1 with four RBIs, Kemmer was 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs, Kate Constantino was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs, Kiser was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, Zerfoss was 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI, Thornton was 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and two RBIs, Sadie Rudesyle was 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI and Carly Best was 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Allison Lencer and Makiya Bellotti both had solo home runs for Forest Area with Cassie Cochran adding a triple.

Kate Constantino got the win going four innings allowing three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six.

Jasmine Ginnery took the loss giving up 19 runs, 15 earned, on 17 hits and six walks while striking out two in four innings.

As the designated home team in Game Two, Clarion continued to hit pounding out seven extra-base hits in four innings in getting the 15-0, four-inning victory.

Alexis Constantino tripled and doubled and went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs. Thornton and Rudesyle each added triples and Kiser a double.

Thornton was 1-for-2 with a walk and two run scored, Rudesyle was 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and two RBIs and Kiser was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Also for Clarion, Zerfoss went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs, Best was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Liz Sarver was 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Jailia Guzzi was 2-for-2 for Forest Area.

Rudesyle got the win going four shutout innings allowing three hits while striking out six.

Jen Lander took the loss going 3 ⅔ innings allowing 15 runs, 14 earned, on 15 hits and four walks.

CRANBERRY 15, CLARION-LIMESTONE 0, 3 INNINGS; CRANBERRY 15, CLARION-LIMESTONE 0, 3 INNINGS

STRATTANVILLE, Pa. — Visiting Cranberry pounded out a pair of 15-0, three-inning wins in a sweep of a doubleheader against Clarion-Limestone.

In the first game, Rachel McCauley and Andrea Watson both hit home runs for the Berries with Watson’s being a 2-run inside-the-park home run and McCauley being a two-run shot over the fence.

Watson was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs and also got the win not allowing a hit while hitting a batter.

McCauley went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Natalie Barcinas was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Also for Cranberry, Malliah Schreck went 2-for-2 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs, Nicole Hutchinson was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, Hannah Duncan was 2-for-2 with a double and a run, Kaylee Weaver was 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs and Bree Swartzfager was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

In the second game, McCauley hit another two-run home run while going 2-for-2 adding a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Watson was 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and two runs scored, Barcinas was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, Hutchinson was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI, Duncan was 1-for-1 with a run scored and two RBIs and Libby Kiefer was 2-for-2 and watched her courtesy runner Elaine Kahle score twice.

Barcinas got the win tossing a one-hit shutout over three innings. She walked one and struck out three.

Orianna Walters had the lone hit for C-L, a single.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 11, KEYSTONE 1, 5 INNINGS

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. — Kylee Lingenfelter, Grace Aikens, Olivia Weaver and Maddie Stonbraker each drove in a pair of runs to lead Punxsutawney to an 11-1, five-inning win over visiting Keystone.

Lingenfelter was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Aikens was 1-for-1, Weaver was 1-for-2 and Stonbraker was 1-for-1 with a run scored.

Brayden Woodrow also doubled and drove in a run for the Lady Chucks.

Lingenfelter got the win going five innings allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out 13. The run, which was earned, came in the fourth, was the first earned run she allowed since April 17, a streak that reached at least 49 ⅔ innings.
