Clarion Shows Brookville Who’s Boss with Blowout Win

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (D9Sports) — Clarion showed Brookville that the Raiders still have a ways to go to be the top dog in the KSAC Large School Division, routing the home team, 58-22 Friday night.

Fresh off convincing wins over Warren and Karns City, Brookville (2-1 overall, 1-1 KSAC Large) couldn’t stop Clarion’s offense. The Bobcats (2-0, 2-0) scored on 9 of 10 possession — only a kneel down on the final possession kept it from a perfect 10-for-10 — and outgained the Raiders 466 yards to 206.

Colton Rapp was a big part of the offensive explosion for Clarion rushing 27 times for 227 yards and three touchdowns while adding two catches for 46 yards and score.

“Give credit to my offensive line, the fullback and Colton,” Clarion head coach Larry Wiser said. “(Colton) reads so well and is so quick. I know Bryan (Dworek) is fast, but that one cut out of the trip in the second half was impressive.”

While Clarion’s offense was doing whatever it wanted, the Bobcats defense was causing havoc for Brookville freshman quarterback Jack Krug, who had thrown for 625 yards and nine touchdowns in his first two varsity contests.

But against the Bobcats, Krug looked more like a freshman going 12 of 21 for 156 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. And his run game wasn’t any help with Brookville picking up just 37 yards on 20 carries after torching Karns City a week ago.

“Defensively, we knew they were a big-play offense,” Wiser said. “I’m pretty proud of my defense and what they did out there. And our special team, again, we held them. They had to drive the field, and I don’t care who you are, that’s tough.”

Wiser said one of the key elements to the Clarion defense was disguising what the Bobcats were doing.

“Frankie (Brookville offensive coordinator Frank Varischetti) sits up there calling plays based on our alignment,” the long-time Clarion mentor said. “We were telling the kids all week about adjusting when you’re like that. They have some great kids and get that bubble screen, and we worked hard against it. It’s still pretty good. I also thought we did a decent job against the trap. We had to stay disciplined there.”

After the teams traded touchdowns 1:20 apart midway through the first quarter, it was all Clarion with the Bobcats scoring 30 of the next 37 points including 27 in a row to take control of the game.

A 3-yard Rapp run late in the first quarter put Clarion ahead 13-7, and
Camden Boggess scored on a 2-yard run with 6:46 to play in the half to make it 20-7.

The Boggess touchdown came after Clarion faced a first-and-20 near midfield and a third-and-long off that. But a Brookville personal foul penalty kept the drive alive.

Right after Boggess scored, Sterling Conner picked off a Krug pass and returned it 35 yards to the house to make it 27-7 with 6:04 left before halftime, and Rapp then caught a 39-yard pass from Spencer Miller to push the lead to 34-7 with 3:48 to go in the half.

Brookville looked like it was going to carry some momentum into the break when Krug and Dworek hooked up with a 30-yard pitch and catch that made it 34-14 with just under a minute to go before the break, but Clarion, after a good return, ran the two-minute offense to perfection setting up a 31-yard Archer Miller field goal as time expired to make it 37-14 at the break.

Rapp then scored on runs of 18 and 42 yards in the third quarter to push the advantage to 51-14, and Logan Minich’s 10-yard run with the running clock early in the fourth made it 58-14.

Brookville got a 6-yard pass from backup quarterback Tyler Ohls to Kyle MacBeth to close out the scoring.

Minich added 55 yards on the ground for Clarion, while Miller was 4 of 10 for 81 yards and the score and also intercepted a pass on defense while rushing for 18 yards.

Dworek had six catches for 75 yards to lead the Brookville receiving corps.
