Clarion Peace Walk: ‘Love Not Hate Makes America Great’

CLARION, Pa. (EYT) — “Whose world? Our world…Peace not hate!” “Love not hate makes America great!” were some of the chants offered on Main Street early Thursday night.

A crowd of approximately 100 people joined a Peace Walk and vigil on Thursday night, peacefully walking from Clarion University to the gazebo at the Clarion Memorial Park on Main Street.

The walk also joined with various International Peace Walks throughout the world.

Co-sponsored by Indivisible We Rise West Central Pennsylvania and the Clarion County League of Women Voters, the walk welcomed people of any political persuasion and along included the Clarion University community and local clergy.

The event went off with a hitch and no counter-demonstration, but it would be difficult for anyone to attack peace.

“This was an opportunity for the greater Clarion community to gather in peace, reflection, and provide a public display of unity,” said event organizer Kathy Knouse. “The gathering was an opportunity to reaffirm our community’s stand in favor of the forces of peace over negativity.”

Tammy Shaw, of Indivisible We Rise West Central Pennsylvania, welcomed the crowda t the gazebo with remarks and thanked the many who helped hold the walk and vigil, including the Presbyterian and Grace Lutheran Churches, and Clarion County Commissioner for use of the park.

“The presence of all of you here shows us that we have made the choice to break through the shadows of negativity which have risen recently in our nation, and instead stand together with our neighbors against these dark forces,” said Shaw. “We are all worthy of dignity.  We are all worthy of a sense of well-being no matter our background, no matter our bank balances, and we are here to reinforce our unity and declare that Clarion thrives because it is an inclusive, welcoming community.”

Singer Samantha Sears also offered “peaceful” songs during the vigil.

A candle light ceremony closed the vigil.
