Oil City Man Receives 20 to 40 Years for Attempted Homicide

FRANKLIN, Pa. (EYT) — An Oil City man convicted of attempted homicide and related offenses was sentenced to serve 20 to 40 years in state prison.

According to court documents, 37-year-old Ruben Richard Craig, III, of Oil City, was found guilty on August 18 of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment in the stabbing of Shawn Schillinger, of Oil City, on May 30, 2016. Schillinger later died on January 12, 2017, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Craig will begin serving his sentence after he serves two concurrent terms of a 4 1/2- to 10-year stretch at SCI Camp Hill for a conviction on two felony counts for prohibited weapons.

Details of the case:

According to a criminal complaint, around 10:21 p.m. on May 30, 2016, Oil City Police Officers responded to the area of the 300 East Third Street for a report of a fight.

Through investigation and multiple interviews, it was discovered that Ruben Craig intentionally attempted to cause the death of Schillinger by stabbing him with a sheath knife a minimum of two times, the complaint states.

The complaint indicates that Craig also “placed Schillinger and other persons in danger of death or serious bodily injury.”

According to the complaint, police conducted interviews which included “an admission by Craig that he used the knife to cause injuries to the victim.”

“Schillinger suffered injuries to the upper right side and or chest area as well as the upper inner thigh or groin area,” the complaint continues.

The Oil City Fire Department and Community Ambulance Service assisted the Oil City Police Department at the scene.

The male victim, Shawn Schillinger, of Oil City, was transported to UPMC Northwest in Seneca and then transferred to a Pittsburgh medical facility for additional life-saving treatment.

Craig’s record also shows aggravated assault charges from 2001 in Philadelphia. Those charges were dropped.
