Forest County News: Students Receive Books, First Graders Churn Butter, Family Literacy Programming, and More

FOREST CO., Pa. (EYT) — Forest Area School District submitted the following articles:

My Favorite Book

Every student in Mrs. Alex’s first grade received a copy of My Favorite Book.

My Favorite Book teaches lessons about personal hygiene, manners, and being a good friend. Thank you to the local businesses in Marienville, Tionesta, and Clarion that made the donations to provide this book for the students. Students are pictured holding thank you notes they wrote to send to the businesses. Spencer Moyer is holding a copy of My Favorite Book.

Students Learn to Make Butter

On Wednesday, November 22, Mrs. Alex’s first grade simulated making butter as the Pilgrims would have using a churn. The first graders shook jars of heavy cream until it became solid like butter. They then were given the chance to taste the butter at their own Thanksgiving feast.

West Forest Students Visit Carnegie Science Center

Recently students from West Forest and the Advanced Chemistry class went on a trip to the Carnegie Science Center.

All in all, the students had an excellent time. They participated in hands-on exhibits to celebrate National Chemistry Week, robotics, space, and physics. They had the opportunity to visit a submarine turned into a museum and the Highmark Sports Center. Students attended a round-table discussion with local chemical engineers in different fields to discuss post-secondary plans and applications of science in career fields.

Family Literacy Programming Comes to Forest County

The Titusville Regional Literacy Council (TRLC) has been awarded a family literacy grant for Forest County. Services will begin in Tionesta with plans to expand to Marienville within the next grant cycle.

If you have a child age 8 or under for whom you are the primary caregiver, you qualify for Family Literacy Services. Family Literacy Services allow adults improve basic skills such as reading, math or writing. Help is also available for writing resumes and cover letters, and preparing for tests such as the driver’s permit, CNA, ASVAB and various entrance exams. The program can also help participants earn their GED and/or high school diploma.

There is free onsite childcare for parents who are studying to improve their skills The early childhood educator works with the child on school readiness skills while the parents are working with the Family Literacy Instructor. The program also provides opportunities for parents and children to engage in enrichment activities together involving reading, crafts and play opportunities.

7th Grade Students Learn Basics of Crab Soccer

Students in Mrs. Hartle’s 7th grade Health Physical Education and Safety class have recently learned the game of crab soccer.

Crab soccer is a fast-paced workout targeting the core muscles. Some of the other health and fitness benefits include

– spacial awareness
– triceps and hamstring strength
– reaction time
– flexibility
– coordination
– teamwork and cooperation

West Forest Students Learn About Government, Holds Class Election

2017-2018 Class Officers

The 6th grade class at West Forest Elementary has been learning about the government and economy of the United States. From the reasons behind our independence to how the election process works, the students have worked very hard.

As part of this unit, the students held their own class election and the winners were: President, Keyon Custer; Vice-President, Tori Brown; Secretary, Izzy Flick; and Treasurer, Katie Salsgiver.

West Forest Students Participate in Fall Festival

West Forest Elementary enjoyed another great F​all ​F​estival on Friday, October 27. The students participated in games, a hayride, and snack. A fun time was had by all. Thank you to the PTO for organizing the event.
