According to police, around 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21, an unidentified ambulance and a 2016 International Harvester operated by 50-year-old Pete H. Thompson, of Winstone Salem, North Carolina, were traveling west in the right lane, near the 55 mile marker. As both vehicles approached an on-ramp at the westbound scales, the driver of the ambulance saw a PennDOT plow truck traveling down the ramp and slowed suddenly.
Police say Thompson moved into the left lane in an attempt to pass the ambulance, and the ambulance also moved into the left lane causing Thompson to take evasive action to avoid impact with the ambulance. This evasive action caused the truck to jackknife, cross into the right lane, and then across the on-ramp narrowly missing the plow truck.
The truck then struck an embankment on the north side of the on-ramp and continued sliding along the embankment.
The truck came to a rest jackknifed with its trailer blocking the on-ramp and the right westbound lane.
The ambulance continued traveling west from the scene.
Thompson was using a seat belt and was not injured.
Knox Volunteer Fire Department and Bauer Truck Repair responded to the scene.
